After nine years of conflict, the situation in
Yemen remains dramatic. According to the United
Nations, 18.2 million of a total of around 34
million people in the country are dependent on
humanitarian aid, including 4.2 million women
and 4.8 million girls.
Almost a decade of instability and displacement
"After almost a decade of instability and displacement,
Yemeni women lack prospects, especially those who care
for their families alone. They have little opportunity
to become independent and rebuild their lives. Because
the main focus is on the daily survival. Many are
currently living on just one meal a day. There is no
improvement in sight as the humanitarian support on
which people depend is noticeably decreasing," says
program coordinator for our alliance organization, CARE
Yemen.
Yemeni women and girls are bearing the brunt of the
conflict, mostly in silence. More than 30 percent of
girls in the country marry before the age of 18 - often
because their families are unable to support them.
These numbers are expected to continue to rise due to
the catastrophic economic situation and declining
funding for humanitarian aid and development.
"People want a good future for their children"
In addition, more than 4.5 million Yemeni children are
currently out of school. Here too, it is primarily girls
of school age between six and 14 who are most affected.
"People want a good future for their children, but they
are forced to focus on meeting immediate life needs. If
they cannot meet the immediate and longer-term needs of
their families, the challenges will continue for
generations," says Country Director of CARE Yemen. “We
urge all stakeholders, including the international community,
to put the Yemeni people, especially women and girls, at
the center of their decisions and actions.”
Partner CARE supports the economic empowerment of women
Our alliance organization, CARE, has been working in
Yemen since 1992 and supports around 2.8 million people
every year with food and livelihood security, water,
sanitation, hygiene and health care, the economic
empowerment of women and access to education.
