These are indeed difficult times for the world and for the children and families HRI serves every day. The political instability and concomitant violence plaguing Haiti most notably impacts the most vulnerable cross sections of the population. And most recently, with the assassination of the President in July, COVID numbers and deaths climbing where there is no access to medical care, and the recent devastating earthquake followed by a tropical storm, the situation has grown worse than we’ve ever seen.
The reality of Guatemala is sadly also riddled with violence and such extreme poverty that desperate families are sending children north to cross the U.S. border. We must stop this unsafe trend. HRI is committed to working with families and communities in Guatemala to improve access to services, to improve food security, to fight the gang violence and to keep people in their homes.
Without you, and others like you, HRI could not fight these battles, nor could we ever hope to achieve the successes we do each and every day. Because of you and other partners, children are safe, fed and healthy and will soon go back to school. Single mothers are increasing their household incomes after HRI’s entrepreneurship trainings. And people have hope for a better tomorrow!
In Guatemala, each and every day HRI is making strides – children are healthier thanks to access to clean water, sanitation and clean cookstoves, and young people are finding their voices and are being heard in positive, non-violent and non-confrontational ways.
After the earthquake in Haiti, HRI quickly jumped into action to deliver crucial supplies including 3,000 kits with essential supplies such as water purification tabs, soap, diapers, mosquito nets, tarps, solar lanterns and more.
We are now working to distribute more than 23,000 meals and potable drinking water at the epicenter of the quake to families who have received no assistance still – over a month after the quake. Your gifts are helping protect families from one of the most common issues after a disaster of this magnitude – water borne disease.
Additionally, HRI is working with small businesses by purchasing supplies from them to lighten the loss they will have sustained due to sales plummeting following the quake. This new partnership will also help single mothers in our Children First program with their income generation projects so they can better provide for their families and afford to send their children to school.
When you give to HRI, you improve the lives of some of the most desperate people I’ve ever met. Thank you for enabling HRI to be there for the thousands of children and families!
