RARE GEM TALENT SCHOOL GG REPORT

By Phyllis W . Munyi-Kariuki | Director

Background

Rare Gem Talent is a school started in 2012 by Dyslexia Organisation, Kenya following public demand for a school to cater for children with dyslexia and other learning difficulties. It is the only inclusive school in Kenya that offers learning solutions to children with specific learning difficulties It is a mixed day and boarding school from pre-school, primary and high school based in Kitengela Township Kajiado County, Kenya. The primary school progressed to high school when some of the children who completed primary school could not be admitted to any high school because of their low marks arising from their special needs. By March 2020 there were 210 children with various special needs as outlined in table below.

  • Autism -21
  • Down Syndrome -6
  • Speech and communication disorders - 13
  • Dyslexia and other Specific LDs - 113
  • Regular Abilities - 53
  • Cerebral Palsy - 4
  • Total -210

Fundraising objective

Due to the outbreak of Covid 19, schools were closed from 6th March 2020 to partially October 2020.  Some overheads could not meet because the school relies on school fees paid by parent to run its operations.  For the 7 months, school was closed, there was not income.  Being on a leased plot of land, rent arrears piled up and we faced the risk of being evicted by the landlord. Salaries to teachers and other support staff was not paid for several months.

After the long break due to covid 19, the government gave guidelines on how schools could be opened in phases. Phase 1 was for grade 4, class 8 and form 4.

Expenditure

The funds received from GG was utilized to meet the government protocol and pay the arrear in rent and salaries.

ITEM

  • Sanitizers
  • Thermal Guns
  • Fumigate the school compound, classrooms and dormitories.
  •  Face Mask for children
  • Salaries 15 teachers
  • Additional Subordinates
  • Covid-19 Teacher Training
  • Other Subordinate Staff Training
  • Paid Salary Arrears
  • Paid Rent Arrears

Conclusion

The funds disbursed enabled us to meet the government requirements for the phase 1 and phase 2 in January 2021 when all children reported back .

We are incredibly grateful to GLOBAL GIVING Platform and all our friends who generously gave their donations. With the support, children have come back to a safer environment.
