Summary

Beginning as a tropical storm and fueled by unusually warm Gulf water, Hurricane Harvey made landfall on Friday, 25 August 2017, as a category 4 "major" hurricane, with wind speeds of 130 mph. Harvey's enormous destruction comes as a result of strong winds, torrential downpours, significant storm-surges and devastating flooding. Now considered to be one of the worst disasters to hit the US, All Hands Volunteers is responding to the millions of Texans reeling from the disaster.

Challenge

Hurricane Harvey dumped 51 inches of rain in parts of Texas, inundating already overwhelmed communities with massive flooding. Millions of people have been impacted by this disaster and need immediate help. All Hands and Hearts Volunteers have set up three different bases around the Houston area and down by the coast in Aransas Pass to help as many people as possible. All Hands is committed to rebuilding hope in communities impacted.

Solution

All Hands and Hearts has two bases, one in northeast Houston and one in Aransas Pass, TX. Over the past 4 months we have provided immediate assistance through volunteer power by salvaging possessions, removing debris, and gutting damaged homes. Rebuild has also started in order to get families back in their homes. Many homeowners are unable to complete this process by themselves, so All Hands comes in free of charge to homeowners to lift the enormous burden off of their shoulder

Long-Term Impact

Our teams are committed to staying in Texas for at least two years in order to help as many families as we can recover from this devastating disaster. By removing wet debris and gutting the home of wet materials during our response phase we will provide homeowners with a safe starting point for the rebuild of their home. We are rebuilding and repairing homes during our recovery phase in order to get families out of shelters or hotels and in a safe, comfortable space.
