Dear Friend,
Thank you for your generous contributions to Sahar! Because of you, Sahar has continued to fund and provide safe transportation for women to our Teacher Training Centers. Upon their graduation, they look forward to educating students from their villages after the completion of the two-year-long cycle.
Transportation is a major issue for many young women living in Northern rural Afghanistan. Many must travel up to two hours each way to attend the lessons that occur six days a week in the city center. With your help, we provide safe and affordable transportation to our centers so women can get their teaching certifications! Upon graduation, long-term economic and social opportunities for our female graduates improve drastically. Training women to become teachers fosters their independence and raises their status, and therefore encourages civic participation. When these women attain teaching positions, they are empowered by their income and ability to manage their budgets and make their own financial decisions.
And there’s more! Not only are you supporting independence for young women in Afghanistan by supporting this project, but your contributions also ensure that that more Afghan girls recieve an education. Hasibaa, a graduate of our Teacher Training had this to say of the value of the training for herself, her family, and her community:
“We are so grateful for the Teaching Training Center, we can come learn to become good teachers and to pass on our education to the children in our villages. When we have presentations, we first practice it within our families. We ask our parents and siblings to be our students and we present to them. They get to learn too."
Female teachers remain a dire need in Afghanistan, particularly in rural areas. Of the 412 districts in Afghanistan, 245 currently don’t have a single woman qualified to teach. In rural areas, finding qualified teachers is even more difficult. Many families prefer or require their daughters to be taught by women, especially once their girls hit puberty. In supporting young Afghan women to become teachers, you are also supporting future generations of educational opportunities for Afghan girls!
So thank YOU so much for your support! We couldn’t do this important work without your generosity and commitment to making a better future for thousands of girls and women in Afghanistan!
Warmly,
Ginna Brelsford
