Dear kind supporters,
Thank you for enabling Manali Stays to be a part of the GlobalGiving Community; your generous donation made it happen and will allow us to make a bigger impact.
We are well and truely on our way to getting the Manali Strays hospital set up. We are up and running because we can't ignore an animal in need simply because of the lack of proper infrastructure. Our first task was to fence the property so that any animal that we rescued was safe and secure... a 380 feet perimeter of fencing was erected enabling our rescues to roam freely and safely.
The next major task was to begin work on the kennel block, because of weather conditions in Manali, this is a slower job and although it is not quite finished, it is almost ready. It still provides shelter from the weather, but we are awaiting the individual partitions to be put in place. This kennel block will be a place for rescued dogs to sleep at night, recover from broken llimbs, or escape the heat in the summer, or cold in the winter. During the day they will be outside playing or snoozing in the apple orchard.
Inside the hospital building itself, we have set up a surgery room, an inpatient treatment room, and an out-patient treatment room. From September to the end of December, we rescued 63 dogs, 2 cats, and 1 Rhesus macaque; we treated 133 animals on our mobile clinic; sterilised 74 dogs; performed,12 general surgeries; vaccinated 480 dogs against rabies; vaccinated 58 puppies against other canine infectious diseases; and treated 72 pets for various medical conditions.
Sheffi, is one of our rescued stray dogs... and the perfect example of why we desperately need diagnostic equipment like an x-ray and ultrasound machine. Sheffi is suffering from severe ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity). We are treating him to remove the fluid, but without proper diagnostic equipment, we can't know for certain what is causing the ascites and treat the underlying cause. As there are no x-ray or ultrasound facilities for animals near by, we must take him on an 8 hour journey to the nearest veterinary college, which is not ideal.
Manali Strays has only been in existence for one year, but already we have acomplished so much thanks to our supporters, such as yourself. Less established organisations like ours really can't continue without people like you. The year 2020 has been difficult for everyone, so your support means more than ever.
