Children are among the most affected by the horrors of war and remain under its negative influence. War leaves a deep and lasting impact on their psyche. Today, every child in Ukraine needs protection and psychological support. It's painful to imagine what children under Russian occupation endured—how terrifying and distressing it must have been for
We would like to share the story of one of the children in our care to help illustrate the importance of the work we are doing together
The mother of a five-year-old boy reached out to a psychologist at our center regarding enuresis (urinary incontinence), which had been troubling the child for over a year. The family had recently relocated to Bucha from the occupied territories after a long period of migration. The boy's father, a soldier, is currently in the combat zone, while the mother is raising two children on her own and working full-time to support the family. The boy exhibits a high level of anxiety, partly due to the losses he's experienced and the frequent changes in his living environment. At school, he struggles to communicate and interact with his peers, often becoming the target of ridicule because of
After the initial consultation, the family underwent medical evaluations, which confirmed that the child's condition was not due to physiological issues but stemmed from his heightened anxiety. As part of the psychological support, our specialist conducted a diagnostic interview with both the mother and child, identifying the key triggers for the boy's anxiety. This allowed the psychologist to develop an individualize
Throughout the therapy process, the psychologist focused on strengthening the boy’s emotional stability and self-regulation skills. In working with the mother, emphasis was placed on establishing a stable daily routine and increasing emotional bonding time with her son. The boy also participated in a series of art therapy sessions, where he could safely express his fears through drawing and play. Gradually, the child became more open, improved his communication with other children, and
After three months of intensive therapy, significant progress was made: the enuresis disappeared completely, and the boy’s anxiety level dropped. He began participating more actively in class and confidently engaging with his peers. The family felt a great sense of relief, and the mother reported improved relations with her son. She noted that he had become calmer and happier. This story highlights the crucial role that timely psychological help plays in the lives of children affected by traumatic events and how it can transform an entire family’s life.
We are overjoyed by the boy's improvement, as he now feels less anxious and has returned to a more normal, fulfilling childhood.
We deeply appreciate your financial support, as it enables us, together with you, to restore childhood for these children. They are our future, and they have the right to simply be children.
