Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia in February 2022, Americares has been actively responding to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and neighboring countries. The organization has provided over $121 million in total aid to 83 local organizations aiding war-affected individuals. Americares has managed to deliver 194 shipments to 36 partners, valued at $115 million, in a strategic effort to supplement its effort with essential medicines and medical supplies that are either scarce in the local markets or too costly for partner organizations to afford. Additionally, Americares Medical Outreach Program—which supports volunteer medical trips with medicines, supplies, and educational resources—has been pivotal, organizing 30 missions in Romania, Poland, and Ukraine, valued at approximately $4.4 million.
To date, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) technical assistance has reached more than 350 frontline workers with trainings and other targeted resources on a variety of mental health topics. Americares financial support to partner organizations has additionally facilitated the implementation of critical MHPSS services such as individual consultations, support groups, psychoeducational campaigns, and safe spaces. From July 2023 - June 2024, we estimate thatthese programs have supported the wellbeing of close to 9,500 individuals affected by the war in Ukraine.
Americares also provided financial and technical support to local partners so that they could continue to deliver services. We provided Ukrainian health-focused NGOs ongoing mentorship on project design, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation. For example, in September 2023, the Americares Ukraine Response Partner Summit brought together 20 priority partners in Lviv, Ukraine to discuss best practices and build internal networks amongst Ukrainian non-profits. In December 2023, we partnered with the local NGO Divchatato carry out a capacity building project for five smaller Ukrainian organizations in our partner network by providing tailored weekly sessions on fundraising, strategic planning, policy development, operational support, and monitoring and evaluation so that our partners could strengthen their ability to implement programs that improve the health and wellbeing of Ukrainians on an ongoing basis.
