GLOBALGIVING REPORT – JUNE 2022

HELP ALLEVIATE MISERY FOR ANIMALS IN CAPE TOWN

Dear GlobalGiving Supporters

How privileged we are to be part of the GlobalGiving Family, which, over the years has attracted many loyal and caring donors who have supported our Project, enabling us to continue with our life-saving work, providing free sterilisations and primary healthcare (vaccinations, deworming and parasite treatment) services to the companion animals in Vrygrond (Capricorn) and surrounding areas.  We express our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you for standing with us as we strive to uplift the lives of vulnerable animals as well as their owners.

Sadly, in the impoverished areas wherein TEARS works, including Vrygrond, there is a huge overpopulation of animals, and communities are at risk of contracting diseases from animals, such as coccidia, giardia, rabies, ringworm, intestinal worms, scabies (mange in dogs), including the passing of diseases borne by ticks and fleas. However, animals who are vaccinated and sterilised are much healthier, and, as a result, the spread of zoonotic diseases (spread from animals to humans) is lessened.  Through TEARS providing free sterilisations and primary healthcare, we are helping to keep township animals healthy, and their owners are benefiting too.

We work closely with other animal organisations, and in Vrygrond, partner with AfriPaw, and it is through this collaborative approach that we are able to help so many more animals.  Together, clinics are held, and once a month, a sterilisation drive is arranged, with animals being transported by our mobile clinics to our onsite registered clinic, where they are sterilised, vaccinated, dewormed, and treated for parasites, before being returned to their owners.  This is over and above the daily TEARS visits to the Vrygrond area, where we conduct mobile clinics and transport animals to our registered clinic for sterilisation, primary healthcare and / or veterinary treatment.

The demand for our services continues to escalate, as the COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating effect on Vrygrond and surrounding communities, with so many people losing their employment and homes. We are hard-pressed to deal with the requests for help to sterilise, vaccinate and provide veterinary treatment for sick and injured pets and the rate of abandonment and people surrendering their pets continues to escalate at a rate never before experienced.

Compassion Education is an important part of what we do, and we have successfully completed a Youth Pet Care Training Programme with 20 marginalised youngsters from Vrygrond.  Every week they have attended sessions where they were given lessons on how to, in every respect, properly care for their canine companions.  This week they will be graduating, and we will provide each one with a certificate of achievement and a t-shirt.  The shirts and branding will reinforce the message: BE KIND TO EVERY KIND, and convey the message about the work that TEARS is doing to educate pet owners and the youth about cultivating a culture and spirit of compassion and care towards animals, as well as towards others too.

Without the wonderful support of those who care about our Project, our lifesaving work would not be possible, and we thank you for your invaluable contributions, which help us to relieve the plight of needy animals and reduce the impact of pet overpopulation, homelessness and disease.

With sincere appreciation and warm regards
