Winters in Afghanistan can be very harsh with very cold temperatures and heavy snowfall. AIL’s environment program teaches people what they can do to deal with winter weather.
Our programs on Meraj TV and Radio include information on home insulation, air pollution caused by coal burning, benefits of planting trees including as wind breaks, fixing leaks to save water and measures to prevent freezing pipes. The aim of the program is to improve people’s health, conserve resources and so help mitigate the effects of climate change.
AIL helps communities deal with increasing water scarcity issues including digging wells for drinking water. Most recently a well was dug in Yelmarb area, District 5 of Mazar Sharif Balkh Province. The people of this area have been struggling with the lack of healthy drinking water for years, and their problems are solved by digging this well. So far, ten wells have been dug in Herat, Bamyan and Balkh provinces for people to have easy access to clean drinking water.
