Health Insurance for Widows and Orphans In FCT-Abuja (GlobalGiving)

Report:                       Report on Health Insurance for 200 Widows and Orphans in Abuja

Period:                        April 22, 2023, to August 18, 2023

Reported By:             Widows and Orphans Empowerment Organisation (WEWE)

Date:                           Friday, August 18, 2023

The objective of the project is to raise funds to enable 200 widows and orphans in Abuja to have access to healthcare services through health insurance. WEWE has raised so far, 116 donations within a period of 2 years and 11 months (September 23, 2020 – August 18, 2023).

In the period reported from April 22, 2023, to August 18, 2023, WEWE received $47.34 donations.

Previously, WEWE has provided health insurance for 81 widows and orphans (55 in 2021 and 26 in 2022) – this is for both National Government Insurance and Private Healthcare Schemes with the help of the funds received in the period reported from WEWE’s GlobalGiving page.

From April 22, 2023, to August 18, 2023 (4 months), WEWE received $47.34 donations from the GlobalGiving but a philanthropist donated funds for the renewal of the health insurance of some old and new registered widows and their children. See group pictures of the 2023 intending new registered widows and their children under the Group, Individual, and Family Social Health Insurance Programme (GIFSHIP) project supported by GlobalGiving.

Currently, with this new registration a total of addition 12 members will be registered making a total of 93 beneficiaries (both old and new widows and orphan children) who have directly benefited from the Group, Individual, and Family Social Health Insurance Programme (GIFSHIP).

Review meeting with the widows:

Objective of the monthly review meeting:

The objective of the meeting was to follow-up on previous meeting updates and success stories from old members who would be beneficiary of the new registration. See Annex 1 for agenda of the meeting.

Attendance: A total of 19 beneficiaries were in attendance [11 widows and 8 orphan children (4 males and 4 females)] See annex 2 for signed copies of the attendance sheet.

List of Challenges and Mitigation Strategies to Solve Health Issues of WEWE’s Widows

Challenge 1:

Slow three-month Delay waiting period before finalizing registration of widows to the health Insurance Scheme.

Mitigation strategy for challenge 1:

WEWE will ensure follow-up to ensure the renewal of the registration of the widows and their orphan children in the healthcare insurance scheme for 2023.

Challenge 2:

Registered in Primary Healthcare Center far from their Location.

Mitigation strategy for challenge 2:

WEWE will follow up to ensure that all the widows and their orphan children are registered in specified Healthcare Centers within their location.

Challenge 3:

Complicated health issues not covered by the Health Insurance.

Mitigation strategy for challenge 3:

WEWE covered the cost of private donations for complicated health issues not covered by health insurance.

Challenge 4:

Widows were asked to pay an additional 10% for expensive drugs out of pocket before they could collect the drug. This means the Health Insurance covers 90% for specific drugs.

Mitigation strategy for challenge 4:

To address this WEWE covered the cost of the additional 10% of the value of the drugs.

Conclusion:

By the end of this reporting quarter, WEWE would have enrolled 93 beneficiaries with the support from 116 donations received from GlobalGiving platform from inception till date.

We now have 107 widows left to be registered into the Health Insurance for 200 Widows and Orphans in Abuja. We solicit for more support from donors to enable us to touch more lives.

We say thank you to all the donors who have been supporting this project on Health Insurance for 200 Widows and Orphans in Abuja.
