Help Support Long-Term Louisiana Hurricane Relief

Project Report | Jan 7, 2022
Thank you for all that you've made possible!

After hurricanes Laura and Delta made landfall in Southwest Louisiana, our teams knew quickly that long-term support would be needed. Despite the challenges our team faced due to the ongoing pandemic, we are so proud of the impact they've made since their work began back in September of 2020, and I am delighted to share with you now our final report detailing what your support helped make possible! With the help of 131 incredible volunteers, our team completed the following recovery tasks:

  • Chainsaw work: 97 jobs completed
  • Tarping and roof repairs: 48 and 23 jobs completed, respectively
  • Debris management: 9 debris cleanups, 55 muck and guts, and 26 mold sanitations
  • Interior home repairs: 11 (16 total homes where repair work took place; 5 handed over to our partners to be completed)
  • ADA compliant wheelchair ramps: 5 constructed

Each and every one of these jobs translates to the homeowners we serve getting one step closer to normalcy and comfort. Here is the story of one of the wonderful women we were able to assist over the past year:

Ms.T recalled the first time she met someone from AHAH. She was picking up tree limbs in her backyard and someone drove up and came around the house and said “You don’t need to do that, I can get you help”.They exchanged phone numbers and we were able to come in and clear the limbs and begin assessing the home for additional repairs. Thankfully, our team was able to conduct interior repairs on her home as well.

While during the process she was looking forward to returning home, she always told the AHAH team she wasn’t in a rush. As long as they were working on her house, she had hope and just loved to see the progress. She would stop by the house every day to check on the team and do yard work. She said the team was always surprising her with the work they did, so much so that it brought tears to her eyes.

Ms. T said, “I am so grateful for all of you who helped work on my house. Ain't nothing but God sent these people”. When asked what she was looking forward to about moving back home she said, “I’ll be at peace again and it will give me peace of mind. I will have my own home back and won't have to be a bother to my niece and her family at their home. I’ll be able to be on my own again and get back to my life”.

Our team is sad to be leaving the Lake Charles region, but grateful that our efforts in the state of Louisiana will continue well into 2022 while our team works to assist families affected by Hurricane Ida.

Thank you again for following our progress here and for supporting this important work!
