Schools Back!!

By Joey Owen | Programmes Director

Hi everyone,

We are extremely pleased to report that schools are now fully open in Nepal! It has been quite a build up during the long wait. As you know from our previous reports, there has been a lot of work ensuring that every one of our students has been able to access a form of education during the extended lockdowns. And at the same time teachers and our team have been preparing the classrooms and facilitating training for teachers across Panauti so we were absolutely ready for the children’s return, and offering the best possible quality of education in schools after being away for so long.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Italian Buddhist Union, as well as amazing support from people like you we achieved a number of outcomes during the last lockdown. These have improved access to and quality of eduction for 4,530 children and young people. They include:

  • Completing training of Teacher Trainers and now have 8 qualified Teacher Trainers who have taken posts across the municipality of Panauti.
  • Each trainer has taken an area post in Panauti serving up to 6 schools where they do ongoing training with 435 teaching staff in topics including: Creative Learning; Safeguarding and Mental Health; Curriculum Enrichment; and Resource Management.
  • 357 children have participated in fun PE, Art, Music and Drama workshops
  • 120 have enjoyed Advocacy workshops and meeting local leaders.
  • Home learning and Outreach visits for over 400 school families
  • We have a team of researchers working closely with the local government informing education policy - resulting in more funds for teaching staff and equipment.

And now we are back in school? Well, as you can imagine, plenty more is happening across all 34 schools in the Municipality. In our next report we will have news of how everyone has adjusted as things start to pick up momentum again - we cannot wait!

If you are local to our UK team in Milford-on-Sea, this Friday, the 1st of October, we also have our first Fundraising Gathering since Covid. There is food, a short film and a presentation by some of our fantastic local students who take part in the Sister Schools project. Please do join us! Details are on the image below.

Best wishes to you all, and thank you again for all your generous support. You really do make a difference in the world, and for children in Nepal.
