Our time in the Pamir mountains has come to a close. Due to circumstances beyond our control, in which we have lost government permissions, we have to close Operation Mercy's branch here in the Pamirs. This was unexpected, but we have always worked with the end in mind: Our goal is ultimately being unnecessary, that our partners can develop and grow without our input, without our assets, without our knowledge. And to this end we are succeeding.
Our nurses have not only become knowledgeable, they have taught others. They have learned new methods, new techniques, and the students have become the teachers. What was once an unsolvable medical issue now has definite steps to alleviate the suffering.
Our greenhouse partners have grown in confidence and knowledge. Watermelon has been grown where it previously has not been grown before. Neighbors of our partners are spending their own money and building greenhouses. The neighbors have come to our partners and our partners have taught them. Our partners have purchased the plastic, the greenhouse seeds, and other needed items without our prodding, without our financial assistance.
So, what can we say but thank you? Hope is very precious, and through your sacrificial generosity, you have given hope to these people. Families and children are eating healthier in partner villages. What little money they have is not wasted on useless or even dangerous 'treatments'. People are seeing that their land is not cursed, that they can use more of their precious resources. They are not a victim of circumstances but rather an empowered people who can now have the confidence and methodology to tackle problems. The high and lofty goal of success is becoming as tangible as a greenhouse, as accessible as the local village clinic down the road. And these goals were not free and they were not accomplished alone but together--with you.
But it I would be foolish to say the world is without need. The need continues. Though we cannot continue here, there is another need in another country where Operation Mercy works. Yet, it is my hope that you would still consider giving. I am confident that your generosity will continue long after the Pamir Project closes, and that your heart will still ache when you see a need, and you will set out to make a difference once again.
Thank you for your partnership and friendship. We may continue this project with another organization, but the future is yet unknown. As the future plans develop, we will keep you informed.
