The Les Anglais microgrid is up and running and EarthSpark is now seeking to continue microgrid development in Haiti with the goal of building 80 microgrids in Haiti by 2020, providing over 200,000 people with clean, affordable energy services, many for the first time.
In partnership with Energy and Security Group, EarthSpark, and the Haiti Energy Institute, Enèji Pwòp recently launched Akademi Enèji ("Energy Academy" in Haitian Creole) an innovative program designed to assess microgrid feasibility in Haiti.
The main output from the study will be a detailed preliminary feasibility assessment and ranking of each of the 100 towns based on economics, physical infrastructure and community objectives. By determining the 80 best locations for near-term development of microgrids of approximately 100 kilowatts each, the study will enable Enèji Pwòp to prepare a fundable investment plan for microgrid expansion in Haiti.
38 teams of local and international researchers set out in August to visit these towns after a week of training on topics such as "Microgrid 101", "Global Energy Context" and "Field Research Methodology" among others. To date the teams have surveyed over 54 towns in Haiti and are expected to wrap up in the next month. We'll post another update when they are back.
