Empowers 100 Zapotec women to be government

We did it!

Thanks to your support, we have defined innovative strategies to increase the impact and create concrete actions facing the challenges of the population, through:

Design of community intervention to generate capacities with a gender perspective in order to guarantee the Human Rights of women;
Prioritize analysis with a gender approach and obtain data disaggregated by sex, through the formation of the Observatory of Political Rights of Women;
The promotion of gender equality through training with the Virtual Diploma of Political Rights of Women 2021 - 2022;
Promote the sum of efforts between civil society, community leaders and public officials to promote the political rights of women;
Encourage the participation and support of men in advancing the political and economic inclusion of women in daily life;
Increase the knowledge, awareness and interest of girls, boys, adolescents and young people about the importance of gender equality, and the full exercise of women's political rights.

More than 100 women involved in training processes in gender and municipal management, principles of democratic education, government management with a rights perspective and in "digital literacy" to be recognized as agents of change in public participation.

Regional observatories:

Contribute to the full exercise of women's rights in contexts free of gender-based political violence, through the consolidation of three Regional Observatories.

Promote capacity building in 35 elected women, who are holding a municipal position, through the Virtual Diploma of "Women's Political Rights"

Face-to-face training through the “Conferences for the prevention and care of political violence against women based on gender”, which take place in three regions of the state: Sierra Norte, Valles Centrales and Costa, bringing together the more than 80 women who they have already formed part of the Observatories, and integrating the women of the 7 newly incorporated municipalities.

Currently, in the Virtual Diploma we have the active participation of 36 women in municipal positions, and more women continue to be added to the list to take the Virtual Diploma.

At Espiral por la Vida A.C., we continue working to generate projects that offer theoretical and practical tools that allow women to appropriate existing knowledge, such as promoting solidarity economies that give them the opportunity to strengthen their economic independence; and on the subject of Rights, we generate content so that they can face their day-to-day life in search of a dignified life free of violence.

Results

3 regional observatories with the participation of more than 80 women.
1 Virtual Diploma in “Women's Political Rights” training 36 women.
5 community networks for the generation of action plans.
25 municipalities covered by the project.

We will continue working to strengthen and increase the number of beneficiaries in other geographical areas of the region, as well as the sum of efforts with strategic alliances in guaranteeing the human rights of women.

Meeting of the Women's Political Rights Observator

Dear friends and benefactors of Espiral por la Vida:

We greet you with joy and hope you are in good health and in family!

We are pleased to express our wishes of health and good fortune to you, as well as to take advantage of this communication to inform you about the activities carried out during this period in communities in three regions of our state.

WOMEN'S RIGHTS, A CONTINUOUS WORK

In this last quarter, Espiral por la Vida continued accompanying indigenous women of the Zapotec and Chatina ethnic groups who live in Sierra Norte, Valles Centrales and Costa and who make up the Citizen Observatories in each of these regions.

The work we carry out with the women is aimed at strengthening the learning they received at the beginning of the year; in such a way that, month after month, we hold face-to-face and virtual meetings through the zoom platform, to address issues of interest such as their political and economic rights.

We consider it essential to work together with the women beneficiaries to promote their rights and understanding of economic issues, which will allow us later to promote strategies to strengthen their economic citizenship and enhance their political activism.

The participation of women in these meetings seeks to foster their leadership skills in each of their municipalities and that they learn to formulate action plans that allow them to expand their opportunities and access a better quality of life in the exercise of their rights.

CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS PLAY AND LEARN ABOUT THEIR RIGHTS

We continued our activities with children and adolescents from seven municipalities in the district of Ixtlán, located in the Sierra Norte of the state. Under the methodology of learning by playing, 6 workshops have been carried out in a hybrid way, face-to-face and virtual, in which we develop playful and dynamic activities to teach them about healthy and nutritious food; they discover reading as a joyful activity that allows them to learn about times, places and characters and a medium that provides them with knowledge; in addition to raising their awareness about environmental care.

In these workshops, the participants learned about the importance of biological and affective nutrition; they shared recipes, stories and legends of their communities and discovered the importance of the ecological footprint of each of the activities we carry out for the care of the environment.

RIGHT TO HEALTHY AND NUTRITIOUS FOOD CAMPAIGN

We are part of a campaign to promote the right to healthy and nutritious food; together with other state and national organizations, we work to promote the exercise of this right through education and awareness to society and competent authorities.

We thank you for your generosity in providing monetary resources, but above all for your confidence in our institution; without a doubt, it represents a commitment to continue working on a daily basis in favor of rights.

The invaluable support you give us is reflected in the formation of the indigenous women with whom we work daily and your generosity is the engine that allows them to begin to trace stories that transform their reality.

ADDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN FAVOR OF WOMEN'S RIGHTS

Integration of the Citizen Observatory Valles

Dear friends and benefactors of Espiral por la Vida:We greet you with joy and hope you are in good health and family!

We value very much to have this space of communication to express our wishes of health and good fortune to you, in addition to share with you our pleasant experiences in communities of the Sierra Norte and in two other regions of our beautiful state.

ADDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN FAVOR OF WOMEN'S RIGHTS

The work we do with indigenous women of the Sierra Norte has allowed us to have the necessary experience to articulate training processes in other regions of the state of Oaxaca, such as Valles Centrales and Costa, where women belonging to the Zapotec and Chatina ethnic groups converge.

In March, we were able to train a total of 88 women who are currently holding elected office in 10 municipalities. They also formed women's networks and were able to bring men on board, in order to encourage the participation of more women in decision-making spaces.

Finally, 2 citizen observatories were formed in the Valles Centrales and Costa regions, each comprising 4 municipalities. In the Sierra Norte, 16 women joined the Citizen Observatory that already exists in this region.

These collectives allow women from different municipalities to exchange experiences, best practices, join forces and work in favor of their political rights.

CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS IN THE PATH OF THEIR RIGHTS AND NON-DISCRIMINATION.

In the Sierra Norte, starting in April, we visited seven municipalities where we conducted activities with children and adolescents to recognize them as holders of their rights under the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Through fun and lively activities they learned the four principles on which this international treaty is based. Among the most relevant lessons learned, we can mention that the adolescents analyzed situations in which they have been discriminated against and others in which they have been discriminated against; they expressed their feelings and emotions in this regard; they understood how discrimination can be imperceptible in everyday life and accepted that all people have the right not to be discriminated against.

RIGHT TO HEALTHY AND NUTRITIOUS FOOD

We continue our work together with other state and national organizations to promote the right to healthy and nutritious food and to encourage society's responsibility for sustainable consumption.

Finally, we would like to thank you for your confidence in our work and for your generosity, which is reflected in your invaluable donations that have become the driving force to achieve our goals.

Your altruism has allowed us to build leadership in more Zapotec women who work daily for the recognition of their rights.
