Peacebuilder Story: Mrs. Lon

By Madeleine Yoder | Project Leader

Mrs. Lon is a counselor for women and children in Kampong Thom province, Cambodia. In her work, she responds to reports of conflict within the community. Learning peacebuilding values and practices with Peace Bridges has helped Mrs. Lon in both her work and personal life.

At home with her family, Mrs. Lon did not always take time to listen to her children’s thoughts and concerns. “I often said bad words around them and lashed out when I felt angry. Unfortunately, I was often impatient with my husband and children.” She sometimes fought with her husband who frequently left the house without talking to her first. This meant Mrs. Lon cooked food but no one was around to eat it, leaving Mrs. Lon angry and alone at home. “Now that I have learned about nonviolent communication and conflict I am more aware of my own responses to stress and anger. I am trying to be more attentive to my children’s and husband’s needs and feelings.” As a result of her personal changes, she has improved her family relationships.

“I have always thought I lacked skills and knowledge to competently resolve conflicts. By studying with Peace Bridges, I gained confidence as well as soft skills and knowledge to be a good mediator, use nonviolent communication, and resolve conflicts in my own life." Since studying with Peace Bridges, Mrs. Lon has used her skills to mediate several cases of domestic conflict and general violence in her community. “I listen to their stories carefully and then help by mediating or by counseling them."
