ASHA, A SUCCESS STORY

Asha from Shivam Self Help Group (SHG) lives in Gwalpahadi, Gurgaon with her husband who is a cab driver. Even though she belongs to the barber community, her daily major activities include taking care of few buffaloes owned by some one else and collecting fodder, for them. She has not done anything else beside looking after the cattle and buffaloes.

She says, “Sukarya found talent in me. I couldn't go to college after my high school. After becoming a member of SHG, the Sukarya team trained me how to do bookkeeping. Now, I am getting paid for compiling accounts for five SHGs.”

Asha has actively participated in the Institutional trainings at Gurgaon and has keen interest in opening her own processing unit at her village. She says “I can dream of owning my business because of my savings from the inter loaning through the SHG and I am ready to apply for bank loan now.”

Progress Report
June-September, 2018

During this time period the focus was on how to strengthen the old SHGs [Self-Help Groups] by providing refresher training and capacity building sessions on Food processing and packaging. The object was to engage more women who can be actively involved in SCPU[Spice and Cereal Processing Unit]to earn their livelihoods. Women group is showing tremendous interest and inclination towards income generation activities as it’s not only helping them financially but also socially. Their reputation and status in family and community is being enhanced. They feel empowered, worthy and capable to run, manage their group and support their families in a dignified manner.

Efforts are being made to explore more marketing and branding opportunities for Spice and cereal products in order to upscale the venture to connect and generate more opportunities and active engagement for rural women towards economic self- reliance and program sustainability.
