Peace Winds is providing medical care and distributing emergency supplies to survivors of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28 -- the most powerful in a century to hit the country. Thousands are confirmed dead, and the damage is extraordinary. Funds are urgently required to support the operations of our ARROWS disaster medical team, one of the few on the ground, and also for us to distribute a range of goods for distribution to families in hard-hit communities.
Thousands of earthquake survivors are in need of medical care, and large numbers of them have lost their homes. Even before the earthquake, war-torn Myanmar was one of Asia's poorest countries, with hundreds of thousands displaced, poor infrastructure, and insufficient health care, making its people especially vulnerable to disasters. Now the demand for humanitarian aid--including food, water, shelter, and basic supplies--is immense and not being met.
Peace Winds ARROWS disaster medical team of doctors, nurses, and emergency logisticians is on the ground treating survivors, while other Peace Winds teams are working with local partners to distribute shelter kits and other essential supplies. Peace Winds has a long history of working throughout Myanmar, providing humanitarian supplies, shelter materials, safe water, and other necessary services. We also operate programs to support Burmese in Thailand along the Thailand-Myanmar border.
Peace Winds is one of the leading organizations conducting emergency disaster response as well as comprehensive long-term disaster recovery activities in Asia and the Pacific. We are committed to maintaining a presence in the earthquake-affected areas to aid both short-term relief and long-term recovery.
