"I don't remember the beginning of the war
very well. I think my brain just shut down,"
says 15-year-old Eva. The girl from the small
town of Hulyaipole in the Zaporizhzhia region
exudes a quiet resilience that belies the suffering
she experienced.
A Difficult Decision
Like many others, her life took a dramatic turn when
the war in Ukraine escalated in February 2022. After
two weeks, she and her mother made the difficult
decision to flee and leave behind the only home they
had ever known. Initially, they stayed with relatives
in a village near Lviv.
The unfamiliar surroundings intensified her feeling of
alienation. Eva continued her classes online at her
old school, but the physical and emotional distance took
its toll. It wasn't until she transferred to a school in
Lviv that the change she longed for came. "I really like
it," she says with a smile. "I've made friends with my
classmates, and the teachers here are incredible."
World Vision Offers Day Center for Displaced Families
Her path to a new life wasn't easy. "It was difficult at
first. No friends, no familiar places," she recalls. By
attending a music school and participating in various
group activities, she slowly began to integrate.
A turning point came when her mother discovered a day
center run by Aktion Deutschland Hilft´s alliance
organization World Vision and its local partner, the
Ukrainian Public Health Foundation. The center offers
displaced families shelter, psychosocial support, and
creative activities such as art therapy.
Eva's Musical Dream
For Eva, the center became a safe place. "I love drawing
and often participate in related activities," she says.
Here, the girl not only found new friends but also an
important support network. And the regular conversations
with psychologists and social workers provide her with
additional comfort and help her process what she has
experienced.
"My dream is to attend a music college in Lviv and become
a professional orchestra conductor. I want to study and go
to Europe, to France," she says, her eyes lighting up as
she talks about her future. For now, however, Eva is
focused on her music, her new friends, and the life she's
slowly built for herself.
