Sudan: Floods deepen humanitarian crisis

By Christoph Lubczyk | Project Leader

Several aid organizations from Aktion Deutschland Hilft have
responded to the consequences of the severe floods in Sudan.
In the east of the country, a dam burst recently dramatically
worsened the situation for surrounding regions. According to
the UN, more than 490,000 people have been affected by the rains
that have continued since June.
Plight in Sudan: War and Floods For the people in the country, the floods are just one of many
disasters. According to assessments by NGOs and UN institutions,
Sudan is considered one of the worst humanitarian crises in the
world. Since the start of the civil war, 10.7 million people have
been forcibly displaced, many of whom have had to flee multiple
times. The floods have now left another 100,000 people homeless.
Increase in cholera infections

Many of the aid organizations that are part of the Aktion
Deutschland Hilft alliance are active in Sudan or neighboring
countries to alleviate the suffering of the people. Now they face
increasingly difficult challenges. According to CARE, over 75 percent
of health centers have been destroyed. Contaminated drinking water is
also increasing cases of cholera, which have already caused dozens of
deaths. In addition to the worsening food crisis, the floods are fueling
a humanitarian catastrophe of unimaginable proportions. Numerous
health stations are overloaded. They can no longer provide people with
adequate medical care. Our partner, the medication relief organization action medeor, together
with a partner organization, has provided additional medical emergency
kits. The medicines they contain, such as antibiotics, painkillers or
medications to treat diarrheal diseases, are distributed to small health
stations. World Vision is involved in sending mobile health teams to
remote regions to address the shortage of medical supplies.

The food crisis continues to have dramatic consequences The United Nations (UN) has already declared famine in some regions of
the country. This is the highest level on the so-called IPC scale, which
classifies the five stages of famine. Displaced people camps, for example
in the East Darfur region, are particularly hard hit. Aid organizations
from Aktion Deutschland Hilft, together with partners, also procure and
distribute food parcels to the population, including in neighboring countries. The partner organisation of Aktion Deutschland Hilft, Help – Hilfe zur
Selbsthilfe provides aid packages with food and household items to ensure
basic supplies for 10,000 refugees. In the Wadai (French: Ouaddaï) region of
Chad, Help has built up an emergency food supply to be able to supply 3,000
people for three months in the event of a crisis.
