Most of the funds that Caritas Austria raised on a national level have been used to distribute building materials like corrugated metal sheets and tools, so that after the devastating earthquake and the aftershocks people can start building preliminary shelter and rebuilding their houses.
In August Caritas Austria in collaboration with different partners is starting the strategic planning for the rehabilitation of the destroyed regions. Help will be concentrated on the construction of schools, health facilities as well as private housing. In cooperation with the local organization PHASE and Caritas Nepal, and despite the shortage on the global markets, it was possible to provide every household in Hagam, Fulpingdanda, Kadambas, and Jalbire with bundles of corrugated metal sheets for the preliminary reconstruction of those houses and buildings damaged or destroyed by the earthquake. Up to this point a total of 4.180 households could be aided in this way and another 70 households shall be reached within the next few weeks. In addition another 4.223 households in Flupingdanda, Hagam, Flupingkot, and Jalbire were provided with shelter kids consisting of blankets, sleeping mats, and WASH-kits (water, sanitation, and hygiene) and another 1.200 household shall receive further WASH-kits within the next weeks.
The monsoon season has begun and excess to remote villages has been–and still is–a big challenge for the international aid helpers. Within these months the highest priority lies in providing the much needed shelter. In cooperation with Caritas Germany and with funds from the donation campaign “Nachbar in Not” Caritas Austria bought and already distributed 1.000 tents which among other things are used as school-tents.
