Education and children learning difficulties;

Background during and after the implementation of the project; Lebanon has also sheltered an extraordinary number of migrants and refugees throughout history. Recently, the Syrian crisis and refugee influx into Lebanon have put an unprecedented amount of social and economic pressure on the country’s public education system. Major efforts, however, have been made to provide education for all at all levels - and to increase enrolment rates in schools and non-formal education centers. Indeed, at the onset of the Syrian crisis, the Ministry of Education developed an ambitious plan aimed at providing quality education to all children regardless of their nationality and status.

Furthermore, and according to recent assessments three quarter of the teenagers – aged between 15and 17 are also out of school. Those remaining out of school are primarily invoking financial reasons. This includes the cost of transportation to school, the cost of educational materials including school cloth, the need to work to support the household income and the need to prioritize rent and food for spending hence de prioritizing education. Finally, other reasons have been recorded such as the difficulty of not coping in following curriculum in different language (Lebanon Crisis Respons Plan). 

 

Naba’a Achievements; During the last period,

-          250 adolescent girls have been targeted in communication, social skills, and decision making workshops. several sessions have been done in 9 villages in Akkar and Tripoli as well as some techniques were used to impart a particular skill such as simulation, role play, group discussion , educational games, storytelling and music and art activities as well for the purpose of providing all of the participants with an equal opportunity to understand the topic taking into consideration the different types of learners and that’s why we insisted to use a variety of methods which fit with all of the participants.

-          Children with learning difficulties is owning a priority in Nabaa' work, since we work with them daily on the school calendar and we support them in the psychological activities and it has clearly affected the progress in which we've achieved regarding the targeted children within our project over the past two years. Add to this, about 627 children out of 966 have been improved in their academic performance.

-          For the reason that Nabaa' seeks to improve and raise the awareness of the local community and preserve the rights of children and youth as well, so it targeted the caregivers through providing them with necessary skills , knowledge and developing their attitudes in order to know how to deal with children and youth in a manner conducive of rights nondiscrimination and nonviolence

Overall idea about the child's life: the child was living in Syria before he fled into Lebanon – Ein el Helwe Camp as well as his childhood was good until his father has injured and his hands arteries have been cut. From that moment, the suffering began with him and he became hyper active and he started to hit whoever sees in the road. Add to this, He cannot control himself where he likes to take others' individuals property, and especially Motorcycle.

- When he moved to the camp, he started to provoke troubles with neighbors. Where he was taking the motorcycle from its place without informing the motorcycle owner and put it in another neighborhood which in turn led to a main problem between his father and the owner of the motorcycle and the latter mentioned that the threat of death will take a place if this issue comes back. Add to this, he is not focusing on his lessons while the teacher is explaining. Also, he makes problems between his classmates and does not study as he leaves the classroom without the permission of the teacher. In addition to that, he also learned how to smoke and became a smoker but when his father learned about this matter, he hit him and forced him to stay in the house.

 

- Economic situation: Moderate - Father is working in the morning in one of the shops as well as he is working as a guard in the evening at one of the parties in the camp.

- Health status: The child has a disease of Thalassemia but the health situation for the other family members is good.

- Social situation:

• The relationship between the child with his father: it was bad but it has become good , since after contacting with the father and providing him with a full idea to understand the problems in which his son is suffering from as well as after setting a plan with him that reside on how he must deal with his son, then their relationship became good. Add to this, the father started to talk with his son more and more and hangout with him and teach him and make him close to him.

• The relationship between the child and his mother: it is bad, since the mother has many pressures, where her mother and her sister is living with her which in turn make them interfere in her child rearing. Add to this, she can't control her emotions and she does not know how to deal with her son as she consider herself that she cannot afford or handle anymore, taking into consideration that the mother has a weak personality.

• The relationship between the child and his brother: It was bad but it has been improved after the sessions and activities that have been implemented. Hence, he became interested and started to play with him.

- The problems in which the child is suffering from:

ADHD – aggression

- Data collection: child - mother – father

- Intervention: a hearing session for the child and his mother.

• Individual / group psychological support activities

• Individual awareness sessions for the child

• Awareness sessions for the mother / father

• Referral to psychological treatment

 

Recommendations:

• Follow-up of the mother in psychosocial support sessions and awareness-raising sessions

• Follow-up of children in psychosocial support activities
