Among the challenges brought by economic uncertainty and political unrest in places like Myanar and Iraq, citizens of these countries still have to worry about infection from COVID-19. Peace Winds remains committed to reducing the risk of infection for these people where space and sanitation is often limited.
Last month, Peace Winds completed a water supply project in Myanmar near the border of Thailand. The project has been two years in the making. Although the pandemic created challenges for the team, getting clean water to the residents of the Kayin State border region was crucial in mitigating the spread of COVID by ensuring that beneficiaries have water for bathing and hand washing. Additionally, Peace Winds conducted COVID prevention classes for students and adults in the community, helping them learn skills like good hygiene and social distancing.
Peace Winds has also been hard at work supporting ICU facilities in Duhok, northern Iraq where conflicts have led to a shortage of medical infrastructure. The only general hospital in Duhok has been tasked with handling moderate to severe COVID cases; however, it is important for the hospital to retain its original function by tending to diseases that smaller hospitals cannot handle. Peace Winds helped the hospital expand its existing COVID treatment ward and provided ICU beds, respirators, medical monitors, and oxygen generators and piping equipment. This way, doctors and nurses in Duhok can tend to more COVID patients while also maintaining the capacity to treat other cases.
Peace Winds would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the donors and followers who have made these projects possible. We look forward to reducing the risk of COVID for even more vulnerable populations in 2022, and we hope you will continue to follow our work here on GlobalGiving and on social media.
