Computer Access Available for GRACE Families

March 2020 Pre-COVID Day at GRACE Center

Amidst the COVID-19 global pandemic, most of our GRACE families have lost their sources of income. With no reserve and very little government stipend assistance, families are experiencing increased levels of stress and challenge.

GRACE family resource centers provide scheduled access to the centers, in order to keep in compliance with the social distancing measures imposed by the government. The staff of GRACE are available as needed to provide access to the computer and internet as families submit registrations for potential government funds.

We look forward to schools resuming and the reopening of our normal afterschool activities at the GRACE family resource centers. Children will eagerly resume computer lab activities. When the social distancing ban lifts, the computers in our family resource center will serve as a practical resource as unemployed parents seek job opportunities. Our GRACE staff will be on hand to assist with basic computer skills.

The increased need provides an opportunity for GRACE to expand adult learning to parents seeking new post-pandemic careers.Your financial support will help purchase needed computers for small classroom settings.

Collectively Advancing Computer Skills

One of the most effective aspects of the after school and day camp programs at GRACE Family Resource Centers in Thailand is digital computer training class. It's grand!

Collective classes within group settings prove effective at our centers. Group sized vary from two persons to a class of twenty. Laptops may be shared with two or three children working together on a skill set, or connected to the projector in our large classroom where children take turns guiding the group through various lessons.

Four computers are available for the children at our two Family Resource Centers. We need six more laptop computers.

The staff members eagerly teach the children basic skills of keyboarding and creating documents.These enthusiatic leaders provide consistent praise and encouragement as they provide assistance for children. Young ones achieve confidence as staff and other children celebrate their ability to hone the skills of hand-eye coordination with operating the mouse and keyboard; likewise, older children advance in English language and document creation skills. All achievements are celebrated and no child is reprimanded for delayed development.

Older children enjoy teaching the younger children. This provides another level of confidence while simultaneously building relationships with each other.

This is your support at work! We realize you cannot physically be at the after school program but you are making it possible to provide this incredibly vital aspect of educational support to the children of GRACE.

Provision of computer literacy classes is as important as reading comprehension in a world advancing digitally each day. The ability to learn and apply computer skills eradicates the vulnerablity often associated with illiteracy-related exploitation and human trafficking situations.

Harvest Time Day Camp Computer Classes

The children in Thailand begin their school year in mid-May. The mid-term affords the children, and teachers, a well-deserved break. Some take the month long time to join extended family and help harvest rice. Others have neither the time to take from work nor the finances to travel. The parents of GRACE children appreciate the family resource centers' day camp activities as it affords them the opportunity to work with peace knowing their children are not only being cared for but thriving in a learning environment they cannot afford to provide for them.

The family resource centers in Thailand serve eighty-seven children each day. The staff ensure the doors are opened at 7:00 AM as parents are traveling to work and close around 5:30 PM as parents complete their day. Amidst the typical day of receiving adequate nutrition, having lots of fun, rotating through classrooms to enhance language, mathematic and reading skills, the children are afforded the opportunity to develop and build computer skills. Our compassionate staff understand the children will have greater opportunities in careers as they eliminate computer illiteracy.

GRACE centers utilize computers to teach English language lessons, word documents, keyboarding, and more. One of the more exciting utilizations of the computers during day camp was the video conference teaching of weaving and looming to create headbands and toboggans. A few volunteers from USA brought in weaving looms and yarn. They not only taught the skill, they resourced the centers with the supplies necessary to advance their skills. The staff and children of the first center, where the American team volunteered, taught the staff and children of the second center via the computers. Webinars at their best! Right?

Wow! What a tremendous utilization of the computers your donations help to place in our centers. Because of you, children are advancing academically and practically. THANK YOU!
