Dear Friends,
Exciting times in Kiruru - showing just what a difference your donations can make.
Last time we were in the community, in late January, we told you how the village had been given an ultimatum by the District education authorities that they had to provide Ministry-standard desks for the pupils, otherwise they wouldn't be allowed to attend classes in the new school in the community, and would have to return to the pupils walking 5 miles every morning and evening to go to their old school. Also we reported how they were doubling the number of pupils, by having two classes use the single classroom in shifts, one in the morning, and one in the afternoon, and had raised enough money in the community to build foundations for a second classroom.
Well, thanks to the generosity of you, our donors, we were able to provide the funds to allow the village to beat their ultimatum, and get the desks in time. But the community have also used your funds to complete the second classroom! Twice as many children can now be educated locally, and not have the dangerous walk every morning and evening. And since some parents were reluctant to allow their children to walk the long distances, that means that many children are now going to school for the first time! Having the second classroom also means that the government will provide a further teacher to the school.
It is rainy season at the moment, which means that the village are all busy in their fields, sowing crops. And because of the rains, it's hard to deliver building materials to site anyway over the dirt roads. But the next priority for Kiruru is to construct teacher's houses, so that two teachers can live in the community, rather than have to commute each day by motorbike (paid for by the community). That will not only mean savings for the community, but more time and social integration for the teachers, and better educational outcomes for the children of Kiruru. All thanks to you and your donations.
If you would like to share this project with friends and family, we and the whole village of Kiruru will be very grateful.
We look forward to sharing more exciting news next time!
Bernie
