Learning and Emotional Wellness at the Clubs

By Katya Miltimore | Executive Director

A safe and comfy space for Club kids to focus.
A safe and comfy space for Club kids to focus.

Clubs kids have returned to the Clubs with joy and excitement!  Clubs are a positive place to be, spend time with friends, get assistance with homework and learn new skills with help from a professional mentor. This year, more than ever, kids need additional support to overcome the effects of learning interruptions, social isolation, anxiety, and even loss caused by the pandemic. The Clubs are investing every resource available to create a space where kids can be kids again.

The emotional toll experienced by children is a heavy one. WA Clubs are creating programs, activities and spaces where Club members can discuss their concerns, address challenges, learn better coping skills and increase their resilience. We are training our staff in trauma-informed care and positive behavior management, while connecting Club families with additional resources in their communities. And we continue to invest in fun: hands on science projects, lots of arts and crafts, daily opportunities for physical activity and outdoor time.

"Our daughter has had a WONDERFUL time at Boys & Girls club finishing out the last few months of aftercare when the pandemic first hit, through last summer, and ALL of the 2020/2021 school year. The club is where she could let out all that pent up energy from the day, play with friends and staff, and have some "normalcy" to her day," Club parents from Lawton Elementary Club in Seattle.

With your continued support, the Clubs remain a safe and positive place for kids to enjoy after school!
