An anniversary of Clubs' efforts

By Katya Miltimore | Executive Director

Hello Friends and Supporters!

A year ago, when Governor Inslee issued the "Stay Home, Stay Healthy" directive, several of Washington's 14 Boys & Girls Club organizations made a critically important decision to remain open to assist emergency workers with childcare and learning support, as WA's schools were closing. Over the course of the following two months most other Clubs have joined, providing in-person services, food deliveries, virtual programming, and other locally tailored assistance. 122 out of 150 Clubhouses in WA have been operational since the beginning of the pandemic.

Since those uncertain times, the Clubs have remained a constant in their local communities, providing families and kids with a safe place for distanced learning, meals, games, recreation and mental health counseling. Working parents got a break by signing up their child for a program at a Boys & Girls Club, and kids made new friends, and kept in touch with old ones, because of the dedicated work and unwavering commitment by their local Boys & Girls Clubs staff.

We are proud of the role we played this past year, and look ahead with an equal mix of anticipation and anxiety to the recovery road before us. Our kids will need support as they reintegrate into in-person learning environment, rekindle friendships, meet new teachers, and learn how to enjoy hybrid school in the months to come. The Clubs, with your support, will be there for them, always seeking out additional resources to ensure that all Club members thrive, learn and grow.

Thank you,

the Washington State Association of Boys & Girls Clubs team.
