Project Report | May 8, 2017
Promoting Reading

By Elizabeth Appleyard | Program Officer

Dear Friends,

We are delighted to let you know that an AIL project has been selected as one of only six projects in the GlobalGiving Girl Fund! The project is 921 Afghan Institute of Learning Empowers Afghan Women. This project will receive one sixth of the donations made during the rest of this year to this special fund!

We would not have been selected for this opportunity without the support we received in the month of March from many donors such as yourselves. Great team effort! Thank you!

Project Update

The AIL education program continues to expand. There are 43 Learning Centers (LCs) in Afghanistan, including 15 rural centers around Herat. So far in 2017, 14,376 students (including 9,549 females) have participated in Learning Center education.

These centers offer a diverse range of subjects (though not at every center) including: math, literacy, Arabic, English, sewing, carpet weaving, computers and chemistry. All the centers seek to provide a diversity of reading matter for their students and centers set up and maintain small libraries if they can. Many Afghan homes have few books so these libraries are particularly important. AIL also publishes a magazine “The Voice of Education” which contains varied reading content so as to appeal to all ages of readers.

Here is the story of one student, “My name is Adela, I am a student in the literacy and sewing classes. When I first enrolled in this LC, I could not read or write. I was illiterate. Now, I can read and write and help my son with his studies. My only wish was to become literate. I am so happy and thankful for the entire team in AIL.”

Thank you for your support and continued interest in our project.
