Each teacher we train becomes a lifeline for struggling readers in Puerto Rico. Orton-Gillingham certified teachers transform dozens of lives each year-students who might otherwise fall behind or give up. The ripple effect is real: children gain confidence, stay on grade level; families see hope; and schools shift their culture as more teachers are empowered with tools that work. Over time, this approach creates lasting change, replacing frustration and failure with equity and opportunity.
In Puerto Rico, too many children are falling behind in reading-not because they can't learn, but because their teachers haven't had access to the right training and tools. Evidence-based methods like Orton-Gillingham, especially in Spanish, are still rare. Without timely support, struggling readers risk being overlooked, misdiagnosed, or left behind.
This project trains teachers across Puerto Rico in the Orton-Gillingham approach-an evidence-based method proven to help struggling readers succeed. By offering certification in Spanish for the first time, we're making this powerful tool accessible to local educators. Each trained teacher supports dozens of students per year, creating a ripple effect of literacy, confidence, and academic success across entire school communities.
By building a network of certified Orton-Gillingham educators across Puerto Rico, this project lays the foundation for lasting, systemic change in how reading is taught. Over time, more children will learn to read on grade level, dropout rates will decrease, and academic equity will improve. Trained teachers become literacy leaders in their communities, creating a sustainable shift toward inclusive, evidence-based education for generations to come.
