The autism awareness fun run is scheduled to take place this year on April 16th, 2022 at the Eldoret sports club in Kenya. This is a big advancement in autism awareness creation in a region where matters of disability and disorders are still discussed in myths, outdated cultural beliefs, and outright wrong and harmful practices.
In this region, many kids are still being abandoned, neglected, chained in homes, and some killed due to the autism diagnosis they carry. It is not a level playing field for persons with disabilities. This is because enough has not been done to bring the challenges of people living with autism to light and it being an invincible disability makes it even harder for people with autism to lay claims for social protection services.
It is three times harder for a person with autism to be acknowledged and registered as a person having a disability or a challenge here in Kenya. The aim of this race is to make sure that enough awareness is created and stigma is reduced.
The funds collected will be directed towards setting up a physical therapy center in Eldoret which can bring together people with autism for services like occupational, speech, and behavior therapy.
