On March 28, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, killing and injuring thousands. Americares aims to address the most critical health challenges facing affected communities, provide lifesaving medical support and enable frontline health workers to deliver care.
Communities near the epicenter of the earthquake -already impacted by years of armed conflict-have suffered widespread destruction. The powerful quake was also felt in Thailand, where it toppled a skyscraper that was under construction in Bangkok, claiming several lives and trapping others under the rubble. The situation is dire, with urgent health needs rapidly escalating. Experts predict the death toll could rise to over 10,000 as search and recovery efforts continue.
Americares is deploying an emergency response team to coordinate with partners on the ground, mobilize critical medical supplies, support frontline health workers and first responders and ensure survivors have access to urgently needed health care.
If access improves and funding allows, Americares is positioned to scale up operations in Myanmar with: Larger grants to rebuild health infrastructure, expansion of mental health programming and training for emergency preparedness and resilience in high-risk communities.
