Building A Positive Learning Environment

By Tara Rana | Communications & Fundraising Officer

Khushi is our bright and active student
Khushi is our bright and active student

Khushi is a bundle of energy and full of wit beyond her age. Meet this extremely talented and active girl.

It is 4 pm sharp on a Monday afternoon and we see a smiling face enter our classroom. Six-year-old Nishu, or as she is fondly called, Khushi takes a seat right in front of the teacher and enthusiastically opens her textbook turning to page 31, where the teacher had last ended the class. She has a sharp pencil in hand and her pencil box sits nearby with an extra pencil, sharpener, scale and eraser at her disposal. When asked, she proudly shouts out that her homework is complete, and why not, today she is going to do her favourite subject, Hindi.

She is a 1st standard student and studies in the nearby State Government School. She likes to be involved in every activity and everything exciting that comes her way. Her active nature does not let her sit still for even a minute. She is so full of energy that she says that she does not even like sleeping. And when you have so much to play, so much to study, and so much to experience you should not waste a single moment.

Her dream is to become a police officer and catch criminals when she grows up. It motivates her to do her homework and tries her best to understand the lessons taught by her school teachers. With no one to clear her doubts at home, she clarifies them with the teachers at the Children’s supportive educational Centre run by Maitri.

Her family comprises of a protective mother, a strict father and a playful big brother.

In the big adult world there are some things that puzzle her, like why she is not allowed to eat and watch TV at the same time, why it can’t always be her turn to lead in the games or how one day she was 5 and the next day she magically turned 6. Between playing games and becoming a successful police officer, she is sure to figure it all out. Right now she just needs to munch on her favourite Dairy Milk Chocolate, have her milk, study hard, play hard and keep giving that bright, lovable smile that only children are capable to giving.

With your valuable support we continue to support and educate more than 100 community children, students of classes one to nine. Our objective is to help them become first generation learners and become productive members of not only their families but of the society. The children are supported by qualified teachers not only with textbook education but also Life Skills and Sports Activities that ensure a well-rounded growth in them.

You would be happy to know, they have been taught to respect nature and work with plants, nurturing them to grow. Each child has a tree for which they have been given ownership.

YOU make it possible for the children to finish school and go to university. We are grateful for your kind support.

Many of our students have demonstrated progress and growth. Nitesh, a class seven student, was timid and unsure at the beginning of the academic year. Maitri teacher noticed that he would often leave maths question mid way because of lack of confidence. With guidance from his teacher, Nitesh is now a picture of confidence and always works towards completing his work at school and on his own while practicing without fear of failure.

Besides, honing their academic abilities, our students have been learning important Life Skills. We hope it will lay a good foundation in them to develop appropriate responses to challenging situations in life.

The children from the community, that we work with have limited educational and employment opportunities and face discrimination based on gender, poverty and caste. In September we partnered with an organization and started Frisbee sessions for our students. Why Ultimate Frisbee? Because the unique elements of Ultimate Frisbee allow more opportunities for personal development and intercultural exchange, communication.

Volunteers play with the students every Sunday morning. We have 25 children of the age group of 6–15 years old who play every week and look forward to it. The children so far have learnt the basic catch and throw techniques of the game along with how to work as a team and support each other.

We are grateful to your support to children like Khushi. Because of you they can grow in a safe and learning environment. Thank you once again!
