AIL’s Learning Centers are there to help all people and though the majority of those educated are women and girls, about 30% of our beneficiaries are men and boys.
In Herat Province alone, AIL has 8,934 students at its Learning Centers, 3,335 are male and of those: 76 are studying chemistry, 158 computers, 58 leadership, and 846 are in literacy classes. AIL also offers classes in traditional Afghan crafts so there are 5 male youth learning glass making, 47 painting, 30 calligraphy and 18 miniature drawing.
Boys are learning how to read alongside girls, and are learning valuable skills in a number of topics like computer technology and English. All of these skills are important in order to be able to take advantage of work opportunities that can help these young men and their families. Education is the way to stop young boys and men drifting into violence and living lives based on ignorance and biased attitudes. It is the way forward for Afghanistan to become a land of peace and prosperity.
Education engages the youth in their future and that of the whole society. Here are the thoughts of one computer student from the Farza district who said, “First of all, I want to thank AIL for giving us this opportunity. My father is farmer and I am also working with him but I wished to study computers. At this center computer is taught without charging any fee. I like this course very much. Secondly, our economic situation is not good and I couldn’t pay fees for university. As AIL is working always to improve youth I request that AIL start a university with low fees so that we could continue our education.”
