AIL is helping some of the most vulnerable boys in Herat City. There are 130 boys at the Street Children LC, some have come in off the streets where they were either wandering aimlessly or trying to earn a little money selling items. Other boys were in school, but had fallen behind in their subjects and needed extra help. All these boys now attend classes in a safe environment. When they are ready, they start studying at the public school but they still receive help at the Street Children LC, where they live. There are 78 in literacy, 39 in math, and 13 studying English. The boys now have purpose and are motivated to do well in school; some already aspire to go to university or to be teachers themselves.

Here is Ahmad’s story:“ I am Ahmad  and I am one of the  students of the AIL Street Children Learning Center. I am going to public school and I am also studying here at the center. My subjects at school are very tough since I want to study hard. Among all the subjects, one of the most difficult ones for me was English. They didn’t really help and teach us well at school, and I couldn’t go to any courses because of the expense but since I came here to this center, I started taking English classes with many of the other students and we are all doing well at it. Now I am doing great at school in English subjects and it has been awhile since I was chosen as the assistant to the English teacher. Our English classes at the center are really great; we are speaking, and doing group work and acting. There are a few of my classmates who already started teaching it at  other Learning Centers. I am also going to start teaching English at those centers, I will be more motivated, strengthened and I will be supported financially.  I want to thank AIL for changing my life.”

Thank you for your interest in boys education in Afghanistan.
