AIL developed its Learning Center program many years ago and the approach has proven effective in educating women of all ages. So far in 2015, 14,309 females (10,522 adolescent girls) have attended classes at Learning Centers in Afghanistan and Pakistan, in varying subjects including, math, literacy, Arabic, English, computers and sewing.

Many students have never had any formal education or very little. Here is one story of a life transformed by AIL: Fatima was brought to the girls’ orphanage in Herat when she was about 8 years old by her relatives.  Both of her parents had died and she had no brothers or sisters.  She was very unhappy and devastated when she came.  She went to school and, when AIL began working with the girls’ orphanage setting up a Learning Center and offering computer and tailoring classes in the afternoon, she joined them.  She is now in the 8^th grade and has excellent computer and tailoring skills.  She works for a small NGO in Herat teaching their students tailoring and doing their computer work.  They are paying her so she has begun to earn money for herself.  All of this has transformed her!!  She is happy, always helping the younger students with their homework and is looking forward to finishing high school, going to university and becoming a teacher.

Education Update

We are working hard to provide as many girls as we can with a quality education. So far in 2015, 9,904 adolescent girls are attending  AIL classes in Afghanistan. There are classes in math, literacy, sewing, English, Arabic, Dari and many other topics. Girls are also learning about health, leadership, elections, democracy and civil society. Lives are changing because minds are being opened to knowledge and self belief.

A student called Masouma said, “ I wasn’t doing anything when I came to this center.  But they put me in literacy class and now I can read and write and soon I will be ready, and they will put me through public school. I want to continue my education as long as I can. I want to thank AIL, it has been a great opportunity for me. I don't know what I would be doing without the center and the classes here."
